21The event bar and its configuration

Events are created from a toolbar in the scene editor. By default it pins the five most used events for quick access: Audio, Image, Texte (text), Vidéo (video) and Vers une autre scène (to another scene). The "Plus" (more) button opens the full panel, organised by category: Média, Quiz, Lien (link), 3D, Masques (masks), Avancé (advanced), plus a Favoris (favourites) category that only appears when your quick-access slots do not all fit in the width of the bar.

The "Plus" menu, with the Favoris category first and the overflowing favourite
When the bar is too narrow, the favourites that overflow appear at the top of the "Plus" menu.

Here are the five icons pinned by default, as they appear in the bar and in your scenes:

  • AudioTriggers a sound: music, voice-over or sound effect in the scene.
  • ImageShows a photo or illustration at full size.
  • Texte (text)Displays a text or an information sheet.
  • Vidéo (video)Plays a video: demonstration, testimonial or tutorial.
  • Vers une autre scène (to another scene)The navigation arrow: it sends the visitor to another scene of the story.

The "Plus" panel: the 30 events sorted by category.

This bar is customisable. The gear wheel to the right of the Plus button opens "Configurer le menu événements" (configure the event menu), and that window doubles as the platform's best inventory: all thirty events are listed, category by category, each with two independent settings.

  • A checkbox: the event is "Présent dans le menu" (present in the menu). Uncheck whatever you never use and the "Plus" menu gets lighter.
  • A star: the event becomes a "Accès rapide" (quick access), meaning pinned in the toolbar.

22Settings shared by all events

Whatever its type, an event is configured in a four-tab panel: "Général" (general), "Conditions", "Ouverture/Fermeture" (opening/closing) and "Animation". The first three apply to all 30 types; the fourth, described in The "Animation" tab, only becomes active on the six types that occupy a place in space. The tables of the next section do not repeat these shared settings: they only list what is specific to each event.

The "Général" tab

  • Title: the event's name (250 characters at most).
  • Activation: "Au clic" (on click: the visitor clicks the point of interest) or "Automatique" (automatic: the event fires on its own over its time range). An event can also be triggered by another one, but the three modes do not coexist: as soon as it is ticked in another event's "Evénements Déclenchés" (triggered events), it loses that switch and its point-of-interest block, replaced by the banner "Cet évènement est déclenché par les évènements suivant :" (this event is triggered by the following events) and an "Ouvrir" (open) button per trigger. That button closes the current panel, it does not take you to the trigger.
  • "Nombre d'ouverture autorisée (0=tout le temps) :" (allowed number of openings, 0 = always): two counters, "Dans la scène" (in the scene) and "Dans la story" (in the story), limiting how many times the event can fire.
  • Point of interest: the appearance of the clickable marker in the scene: icon (from the built-in set or a custom one), animation, title display ("Placer sur le média." place it on the media, "Afficher au survol" show on hover, or "Ne jamais afficher" never show) and title position, size, colours, position and rotation in the sphere. Visibility rests on two independent switches, not on one setting with two values: "Visible" on one side, "Uniquement au survol" (on hover only) on the other, the latter staying greyed out as long as the former is off. "Taille" (size) runs from 0.05 to 5, and up to 20 with a custom icon.
  • "Mode d'affichage" (display mode): this block only exists for the Texte, Image, Vidéo and Diaporama events. "Premier plan" (foreground) shows a window on screen, "Localisé" (localised) places a panel in the 360 backdrop. "Taille" (size) runs from 0.1 to 5 and is greyed out in "Premier plan"; "Largeur max du panneau" (maximum panel width), from 0.1 to 5, only exists for Texte. On creation, Texte, Image and Vidéo start out "Localisé", the Diaporama "Premier plan".
  • The time range: the event's start and end are set on the scene's timeline, by dragging its bar, or typed in the "Plage sur la timeline" (timeline range) area of the "Activation" block, with two fields, "Début (min:sec)" (start) and "Fin (min:sec)" (end). On a one-shot event, whose duration is fixed, the end field is greyed out. A badly written value is simply ignored, with no message.

Reusing an event's settings. Duplicating an event, or pasting one of its areas onto another, now carries over all of its settings, including the most recent ones: a text's advanced style and font, an image's caption, the green screen settings, a 3D object's rendering and animation. One consequence to know: pasting the "Affichage" (display) area also carries over the source event's animation and font, not just its position.

The "Conditions" tab

This tab restricts the event to cases where conditions are met, combinable with AND/OR and subgroups. Available conditions: another event being opened or closed, the answer chosen to a question, whether an answer was right or wrong, a question set's score (between a minimum and maximum percentage), display on the control tablet only, the playback support (web or headset), a variable's value, the number of visits to a scene, and the device's battery level. Two more only appear in "Réalité Mixte" (mixed reality): "Trigger", which targets a 3D object marked as a trigger, and "Ligne disponible" (lane available). The detail is in Conditions.

The "Ouverture/Fermeture" tab

The two halves of this tab do not offer the same things. On "Ouverture" (opening): a dedicated sound ("Audio joué au déclenchement de votre événement", the sound played when your event fires, with its volume, overriding the global event sound), one variable to change ("Gestion des variables", variable management) and events to launch ("Evénements Déclenchés", triggered events). On "Fermeture" (closing): one variable to change and events to launch ("Evènements exécutés", executed events), with no audio block at all: there is no closing sound. Each block acts on a single variable; to change several at once, chain a SetVariable event. The events offered are those of the current scene. This chaining is what lets you build elaborate mechanics without a line of code: a click opens a text, which on closing unlocks a navigation arrow.

An event's settings panel: four tabs, three of them shared by all 30 types, the fourth active on six of them.

23The input screens, one by one

The settings panel changes its content with the event type, and that is where the real work happens. Here are the screens you will meet most often, in the order you discover them.

The answer type block of a multiple-choice question: QCU or QCM, text or image
Two toggles decide everything: one correct answer or several, as text or as images.

A text

The "Texte" block opens on a "Contenu" (content) sub-block with two fields: an "En-tête" (heading) and a "Texte" (text). Each field carries two small icons on its right, a proofreader and a writing-assistance wand.

The "Options" sub-block handles appearance: "alignement" (alignment: left, centre, right), "style" (bold), the "Police" (font), which follows the story's own until you pick another, "Couleur du texte" (text colour), "Couleur du fond" (background colour), and a "Sortie automatique" (automatic exit) switch. Two buttons at the head of this sub-block copy and paste that formatting from one text to another, without carrying the content over. A "Style avancé" (advanced style) section goes further, for those who need it: on the text side, letter spacing, line height, an outline and its drop shadow; on the frame side, corner radius, border and inner padding. A "Réinitialiser le style avancé" (reset advanced style) button returns to the starting state. An "Audio" block finally lets you back the text with a sound.

A text's options: alignment, bold, the two colours and automatic exit.

An instruction ("Consigne")

The instruction looks like a text, but plays a different role: it is a panel that takes over the screen and that the visitor closes themselves. Its "Consigne" block gathers a "Titre" (title), a "Texte", a "Label du bouton" (button label, "Continuer" by default, worth changing when "I understand" or "Start" fits your point better), then three colours: title, text and background. "Image" and "Audio" blocks follow.

The input screen of an instruction. The button label can be rewritten: it often makes the difference between an instruction endured and one understood.

A choice question

The "Question" block carries the wording, then three settings that decide the behaviour:

  • "Type": QCU, a single possible answer, or QCM, several.
  • "format": "Texte" or "Image". In image format the answers are thumbnails: ideal for "which of these three pieces of equipment is compliant?".
  • "Temps pour répondre" (time to answer): a slider in seconds, zero by default, meaning no limit. Setting it to anything else changes the nature of the exercise entirely. That slider does not run from zero to infinity: it stops at the duration set in "Temps sur la scène (mm:ss)" (time in the scene). On a scene with no duration it therefore stays stuck at zero: set the scene duration first. The seconds field next to the slider does accept a value even in that case.
Answer type block of an easystory360 question: QCU or QCM, Texte or Image format, time to answer
Answer type and timer: three settings that turn the same question into a very different exercise.

The "Réponses" (answers) block fills up with the "Nouvelle réponse" (new answer) button. Each answer opens its own card: its text, an "evaluation" sub-block with the "Bonne réponse" (right answer) checkbox and the "Points" field, a "Variable" sub-block, and a delete button. Collapsed, the card summarises its score.

An answer's card: whether it is right, what it is worth, and the variable it can set along the way.

An open question

Here there is no answer list: a single "Réponse" field that holds the expected answer, and a scoring block with two fields, "Points en cas de bonne réponse" and "Points en cas de mauvaise réponse", both zero by default.

The difference from the choice question lies in the scoring: on a choice question, each answer carries its own points, from -100 to 100, so a ticked wrong answer can take points away; on a free-answer question, the question itself carries two values, one for a right answer and one for a wrong one.

The open question: the expected answer, and a scale that tells right from wrong.

A bonus or a malus

Bonus/Malus is not a question: it is a score adjustment. Its "Options" block holds three settings: the "Questionnaire" dropdown naming the score concerned, the "Max Points" field, and an "Affiche interface" (show interface) switch depending on whether the adjustment should be visible to the visitor or silent.

Options of an easystory360 Bonus/Malus event: target question set, Max Points, show interface
Bonus/Malus: a score adjustment attached to a question set, either quiet or announced.

A hidden object game

This is a multiple-choice question set in the scenery rather than in a list, and that is exactly what makes it worthwhile. You write a question in the "Question" block, say "Trouvez les équipements de sécurité" (find the safety equipment), then you place in the 360 bubble as many answer points as there are answers, right and wrong alike. The "Réponses" (answers) block and its "Nouvelle réponse" (new answer) button are what create them one by one.

The visitor clicks the points they believe are correct, then validates their selection, exactly as they would on a single or multiple choice question. The difference comes down to one word: the answer is not a label in a list, it is a place in the image.

These same screens are also used outside a story, in "Mes quiz" (my quizzes), to write your questions ahead of time or import a batch from a spreadsheet.

24The 30 events, category by category

Here is the full catalogue of events you can create from the editor, in the order of the "Plus" panel. For each one: what it is for, and its main specific settings (the shared settings of the previous section always apply on top). Event names are given as they appear in the French interface, with their English meaning.

The list of settings offered by the headset settings event
The "Paramètres des casques" event acts on the headset itself: recentring, reticle, controllers, volume.
The top of the event catalogue: Favoris, Média, Quiz
The catalogue opens from the "Plus" button. Favourites come first, then the categories.

Each event is preceded by its icon, the one identifying it in the events bar and in the "Plus" menu. Do not confuse it with the icon the visitor will see: that one is chosen freely, event by event, from a dedicated icon library. The first helps you find your way in the editor, the second dresses the scene.

Favoris (favourites)

This category holds no events of its own: it gathers the quick-access slots that do not fit in the width of the bar. Its content therefore changes with the width of the panel.

Média (media)

  • AudioPlay a sound or commentary in the scene. Main settings: audio file, volume, looping, pausing when another event fires.
  • ImageDisplay an image: photo, diagram, panel. Main settings: image file; transparency mask (a second image that cuts out the first, in black-and-white mode or using the mask's transparency); foreground display or localised in the backdrop.
  • Texte (text)Display a text panel with a header. Main settings: header (80 characters at most), text (1,000 characters at most), alignment, style, text and background colours, automatic closing at the end of its time range; "Orthographe" (spelling) and "Reformuler" (rephrase) writing aids. You may leave the header or the text empty, but not both: the story would be flagged in error, with the message "Aucun texte saisi (titre et contenu vides)" (no text entered, title and content empty).
  • Vidéo (video)Play a video: in a window, full screen, or embedded in the scene, including a green-screen cut-out character. Main settings: video file, volume, loop, full screen, automatic closing; green screen (activation, colour picker, ground shadow, tolerance, edge softness, spill suppression); transparency mask; packed transparency; start condition for videos placed in the backdrop (the video waits paused on its first frame).
  • Vers une autre scène (to another scene)The navigation arrow: send the visitor to another scene of the story. Main settings: destination scene (required), arrival time in the scene, transition type (none, fade to a colour, cross-scene fade, dynamic, VR comfort blink, cross-fade with zoom, iris, disintegration, wipe), fade colour, arrival facing a destination point.
  • Diaporama (slideshow)Run through a series of images. Main settings: image list, full screen, automatic scrolling, slide duration, slide numbers, previous/next buttons.
  • Texte Enrichi (rich text)Display a formatted content panel (headings, lists, images) written in a built-in editor. Main settings: window position (left, centre, right or full screen), width, interaction with the scene still possible while reading, colours, one- or two-column layout. Web publishing only.

An image can carry a caption, in a "Légende" (caption) block of its own: a text of at most 300 characters, its alignment, its font, its size from 0.5 to 2.5, the text colour, the background colour and that background's opacity. As long as the text is empty, none of these settings appears, and the visitor sees no caption.

On a video, a third route joins the green screen and the separate mask: packed transparency, where the video already carries its own mask, the picture on one side and the mask on the other. The list, headed "Transparence intégrée (alpha packé)" (packed alpha transparency), offers "Aucune" (none), "Haut / bas" (top / bottom) and "Gauche / droite" (left / right). This setting takes precedence over the other two: choose it and the green screen and the mask are ignored.

Quiz

  • Consigne (instructions)Display an instruction window (title, text, image, button) the visitor closes to continue. Main settings: title, text, button label ("Continuer" by default), colours, attached image with zoom allowed, sound played on opening; advanced options: image position and maximum sizes of the window and image.
  • Question à choix (multiple-choice question)Ask a question with proposed answers, single or multiple choice. Main settings: question, answer type (single or multiple choice), answers as text or images, time to answer, points per answer and variable assignment, right/wrong answer feedback (text, sound, triggered events), attachment to a question set, hint, correction display, automatic closing.
  • Question à réponse libre (open question)Ask a question the visitor types the answer to. In practice, keep it for the web: a standalone headset has no keyboard, and typing on a virtual one puts people off. Main settings: question, expected answer, points for right and wrong answers, image, sound, time to answer, feedback and triggered events, same question-set options as the choice question.
  • Objets cachés (hidden objects)Ask the visitor to find and click spots in the 360 image (seek and find). Main settings: question, spots to find placed directly in the scene (image, size, points, variable), multiple choice and enforced order possible, time to answer, sound, right/wrong feedback, question-set options.
  • DebriefingDisplay a score summary, with a different message depending on success. Main settings: title and description, score relative to a specific question set or to the global score, percentage or points display, "end of story" option; score tiers (percentage ranges) each with its own description, audio and triggered events.
  • Bonus/Malus (bonus/penalty)Add or remove points from the score when the event fires, without a question. Main settings: question set concerned, number of points (positive or negative), optional announcement window with title and description.

Lien (link)

  • Vers une page internet (to a web page)Open a website from the scene, on web publishing only (see the warning below). The panel has two blocks: "Paramètres" (settings) takes the address in a "URL" field (https), and "Options" shows a single switch, labelled "Recentrer" (recenter). That switch does not keep its state from one working session to the next: do not build anything on it. No editor setting commands the link to open in a new tab.
  • Groupe d'évènements (event group)Trigger a pre-built group of events all at once. Main settings: group choice, delay before launch (0 to 20 seconds). Do not look for a "group" field: through a platform mistake the list is labelled "Scène d'arrivée" (arrival scene), and its error message is "Une scène est requise!" (a scene is required). Groups are created from the scene's event list. Web publishing only.
  • Vers une autre story (to another story)Send the visitor to another of your published stories. Main setting: the destination story, required.
  • Point de destination (destination point)It is placed in the arrival scene and chosen from the departure scene: it is where the camera turns when the visitor lands, if the link bringing them there ticked that option. The initial point of view sets a scene's default orientation; the destination point overrides it, for that arrival path only. Two doors leading to the same room can therefore make you look at two different things. Its panel is a reduced one: a "Titre" (title), a position block, and the Conditions and Ouverture/Fermeture tabs. It has neither an "Activation" block nor a "Point d'intérêt" (point of interest) block: it is positioned directly in the 360 view.

3D

  • Objet (object)Place a 3D object in the scene, still or rotating. Main settings: 3D file, size, position (with a helper to set the object on the ground), rotation, rotation animation (speed and axes).

A 3D file can carry animations of its own. The "Animation du modèle" (model animation) block lists them with their duration and lets you pick the one to play, its "Mode" (loop, once or back and forth), its "Vitesse" (speed) from 0.1 to 3, and whether it starts when the scene loads or only when the event opens. Do not confuse this block with the "Animation" tab described further on: the tab moves the event through the scene over time, this block plays a movement already inside the file. The two stack. The "Rendu" (rendering) block adds a "Non éclairé" (unlit) switch, useful for stylised models whose colours must stay as they are. The "Modèle" (model) block, finally, shows the dimensions, the triangle count, the textures and the file size, with an "Analyser" (analyse) button when that information is missing.

  • AvatarBring in a 3D character (guide, virtual trainer) who speaks in the scene. Main settings: size, position, rotation, sound played by the avatar with its volume, delay before speaking (0 to 180 seconds). The "Avatar" list does not offer to create a new character: it only holds the other avatars already placed in the scene, so you can reuse their appearance. A new avatar is set up directly.

Masques (masks)

  • Zone d'intérêt (area of interest)Steer the visitor's gaze to a precise spot, like a theatre follow spot. A white circle appears wherever the visitor is looking, then travels to the designated area: that area alone stays lit while the rest of the setting darkens. The visitor follows the movement without being told to. Its panel is a reduced one: a "Titre" (title), a position and rotation block, and the Conditions and Ouverture/Fermeture tabs. It has neither an "Activation" block nor a "Point d'intérêt" (point of interest) block: the area is placed directly in the 360 view.
  • Masque 360 (360 mask)Overlay a full 360 image on top of the scene's backdrop, for instance to reveal a modified state of the place. Main settings: 360 image to overlay, fade-in.

Avancé (advanced)

3D, Masques and Avancé categories of the easystory360 "Plus" menu, enlarged for legibility
The bottom of the "Plus" menu, enlarged: the 3D and Masques categories, and the nine entries under Avancé.
  • Formulaire (form)Compose a form: a "Titre" (title, 50 characters), a "Description" (500 characters), then as many fields as you like, added one by one. Each field carries a name, a type and a "requis" (required) checkbox. The types shown are Email, Phone, Int, Float, String, Text, Bool, Score, Variable, Date and DateEnd. A Score field replaces the "requis" checkbox with the choice of the question set whose result it takes; the Score and Variable types add a record-on-change checkbox. Two limits to know before building a form: the field list is not read back when you reopen your stories, and the RAPPORTS > Formulaire page does not pick up forms composed from this panel. The title and the description are kept. In this version, do not rely on this event to collect answers. Web publishing only.
  • Reconnaissance vocale (voice recognition)Let the visitor answer by voice: recognising an expected word triggers events. Main settings: lists of expected words; for each list, a title, the triggered events and points. General options: pause the story on opening, lower the volume, require all lists to be validated, show list titles, attach the whole to a question set.
  • Selection de la langue (language selection)Offer the visitor a language choice, or impose one, in a multilingual story. The panel, headed "Choix de la langue" (language choice), offers a "Titre" (title) limited to 50 characters, a "Mode" with two buttons, "Unique" (direct switch to a specific language) or "Multiple" (the visitor picks), then the language list, shown by their uppercase code with their flag. Three things to know. The list always offers the same five languages, French, English, Spanish, German and Italian, whatever languages your story declares. On a new event, "Multiple" mode is preselected and the language list is visible from the start. Finally, switching to "Unique" mode keeps only the first language of your selection. The mode and the languages you pick are saved, and read back when you reopen the story.
  • Paramètres des casques (headset settings)Change the VR headset's behaviour mid-story. The panel lists the settings you add one at a time. Each line starts with a "Type" chosen from ten: "Recentrer" (recenter), "Visibilité du Viseur" (pointer visibility), "Taille du viseur" (pointer size), "Vitesse du viseur" (pointer speed), "Affichage Time Line" (timeline display), "Ouvrir une autre application" (open another application), "Affichage UI : Envoie de message" (UI: send message), "Affichage des manettes" (controller display), "Affichage UI : Notifie Formateur" (UI: notify trainer), "Volume". An event with no parameter at all puts the story in error, with the message "Aucun paramètre défini" (no parameter defined). Only three types open a setting: "Visibilité du Viseur" and its "Affichage du viseur en permanence" (always show the pointer) switch, "Volume" and its 0 to 100 slider, and "Taille du viseur" with its two Min and Max sliders. Those last two are not read back when you reopen your stories. The other seven types are placed as they are, with no value to set. VR headsets only.
  • SetVariableChange the value of one or more story variables, to drive conditions elsewhere. Main settings: list of variables to change; depending on type, true/false, number, text, or for a stopwatch, start, stop, set.
  • Fin de story (end of story)End the experience at this point. No specific settings, and no position block. The "Au clic / Automatique" switch is greyed out: automatic opening is imposed. Conditions and chaining remain.
  • Rotation automatique de la caméra (automatic camera rotation)Make the view rotate on its own: passive tour, waiting mode on a kiosk. No specific settings: the event's time range bounds the rotation. Web publishing only.
  • Pause Video sceneIn a 360 video scene, pause the video, for instance while a question is answered. Main settings: pause switch, delay before pausing (0 to 60 seconds), pause duration (0 to 60 seconds).
  • Afficher carte (show map)Open the project's map and display a specific level. Main settings: level to display, classic overlay display with a close button. The map is set up beforehand in the editor, left-hand column, "Plan/Carte" (plan/map) button, which opens the "Configuration de la carte" (map configuration) window. The platform's message "Veuillez d'abord configurer la carte dans les options du scénario" (please set up the map in the scenario options first) points to that same place.

Seven events do not work everywhere

The vast majority of events behave the same way on the web and in a headset. Seven are exceptions, and the platform tells you so: when you open the settings panel of one of these events, a warning banner appears at the top of the panel.

  • Vers une page internet (to a web page)Web publishing only.
  • Texte Enrichi (rich text)Web publishing only.
  • Groupe d'évènements (event group)Web publishing only.
  • Formulaire (form)Web publishing only.
  • Rotation automatique de la caméra (automatic camera rotation)Web publishing only.
  • Vers un média (to a media file)Web publishing only. This event can no longer be created from the current editor, but it may linger in older stories. The icon shown here is indeed its own: it has since been reassigned to "Groupe d'évènements", hence the duplicate in this list.
  • Paramètres des casques (headset settings)VR headsets only.

One quieter case joins that list: the 3D icons offered to represent an event in the scene are likewise available on web publishing only. The 3D tab of the icon picker reminds you as you choose one.
